Every parent want their child to excel in life, be it academic or extracurricular activities. But as we all will agree that, every child is different and so do their choices and liking. While growing up, they decide their preferences and start working towards them rigorously. The case here is that every child has different skills, which other may lack.
In this process , what we, as parents, should understand is that, the complete personality is made not only by academic excellence but also by fairing well in life skills as well. And these cannot be completely taught in schools. We, parents, have a big role in developing and molding life skills in them. So today, I will state some of these life skills which every child should know, as they in turn, will not only help them in building their personality, but will also help them when we will not be around for them. These skills will help them to endure and survive the emergencies in life. As they are developed over the years, we should make a mental note of start teaching some or all of them at the appropriate age.
These skills may vary from family to family, place to place and culture to culture. The parents should decide what skills will be useful for their overall development and what will be their outcomes. This is a big responsibility as our teaching will not only make their future but future of their fellow members, future family, country and mankind. Their should be enough clarity in our words, actions and teachings. One should make sure to teach those skills, which will help them in being acceptable by the society worldwide and in adjusting with the changing scenario.
I will try and state some of those skills which are near what universal in their aspect. They may vary in their level of acceptance but the essence will be same all over the world.
Be it a girl or a boy, they should know and enjoy cooking. As a parent, you can ask your kid to assist you in the kitchen from a young age. Gradually you will notice that they will enjoy the process and cooking will become easy to them. This is always a good thing, as it will instill healthy and polite dining etiquette. Also this may ensure that your kid can cook a meal for themselves whenever you are not around.
Wilderness Survival Skill
You can take your kids to wilderness survival camps. Such camps will teach your kids’ skills such as how to build a shelter, cook over a campfire, move safely over harsh terrain, etc. These skills will help kids build self-confidence and independence, at the same time experiencing fun adventures. Always encourage them for such camps as they also teach team work, sharing resources and enduring hardships in life.
Home garden basics
This is a life skill that teaches children to respect and cherish nature, and also become self-sufficient if needed. Consider using your backyard garden for this purpose. Your kids can learn basic skills about how weather affect plants, how seeds sprout, how gardeners cope with plant problems, etc. You can also name a tree after your child, and watch them grow together.
First aid skill
This is one of the most important skill one must teach their children. Children hurt themselves quite frequently while playing, so this should be a high priority life skill training for them. They should learn how to save themselves and others from accidents and emergencies.
You can teach this essential life skill during a fun water activity. Your kid needs to learn how to swim even if you are not staying close to water. This is one skill that may not only save the one who knows it, but also others. This is also a very good form of exercise and will keep your child healthy and strong.
Money Management skills
This is one of the most important life skills that you can teach your children. Teach them the value of money and how to save money in order to use it in future. Guide them in calculating on how much money they need to spend and how much to save. You can have fun activities for them where you ask them to understand the importance of life. Be very careful and diligent in giving them a pocket money and always ask them as where have they spent the money. This will make them responsible and careful in spending money.
This is a skill which every kid should learn at an early stage. Washing their own clothes will be helpful for your kid when he/she goes to school or college. Your kid will not only learn how to take care of their own clothes, but they might also enjoy the activity. This will bring some amount of discipline in them as well.
If you have noticed, children are always eager to know what is inside a TV, fridge, washing machine, mobile, etc. Motivate them to learn something more from their inquisitiveness. You can teach him/her to change a light bulb, how to unclog a toilet or turn off the gas. But don’t forget to guide them about the safety measures they need to keep in mind while handling electronic goods.
You can’t be with your kids all the time to protect them from life’s unpleasant surprises. So why don’t you get him/her admitted in a defense skill class, such as a karate training program? Such lessons will not only enable your kid to avert any sudden attack, it will also help in his/her overall mind-focus development. Be it any country in the world, self defense is like a weapon that they will carry with them to far flung areas, which will help them in moving ahead in life without any fear.
You should start teaching your kid how to manage time from an early age. Teach them to dress without help, get ready before school, and finish homework within a specified time. As they grows up, they’ll know how to manage time effectively. This is the most important skill one must teach as this is the key mantra of success in life.
In today’s lifestyle, we are daily struggling with our insecurities and conflicts. And there is always a performance pressure of ours and others expectations. Just think about the magnitude of these challenges, when our children will take our position. We should prepare them for all the challenges in life from a very young age as this will not only help them in future but also their surroundings as well.
