Books and Me

I have often heard people saying that books are my best friend. I strongly believe it to be true but its not the only truth. Books are a lot more than that to me. I am a voracious reader. I can spend endless time with them. With Mr. Husband and the little one around, may be sometimes I have to forego my book, but its still very much present in my mind. As and when I get some time off, I take my book and get lost in its mesmerizing world. When my little one is cribbing a lot, I give her, her book(which she delightfully calls AB) and we both mother- daughter duo goes into our own la-la land respectively. I feel so good reading as if I am in a different world. It will be true to some extend that my books are my most priced possession(I have other priced possession as well). In point of fact, I wish to have a study corner in my home where there will be umpteen books to display. That will be the happiest and delightful corner of the house.

So on this World Book day just gone by, I will love to share my happiness while discussing books.

Books are definitely one of the biggest sources of knowledge and intelligence for me. There are wide varieties of books written by different authors covering different areas. Being a book lover, there are broadly two types of genres of book i.e. fiction and non-fiction and each of these categories again has its sub-types. Apart from that, there might also be some books that might fit in different categories also. I have my own liking for fiction particularly as sometimes non-fiction depresses me. That does not imply that I dislike non-fiction, its just that, it lingers on my mind for a longer duration if its not a happy one. I always want every story to have a happy ending as it makes the story complete. Its like a full life cycle, from birth till death. While stories and event ending on a sad note always gives me an incomplete feeling, like there is still some story left. Keeping aside my thoughts, books can be read out of passion as a hobby, or books can also be read to gain knowledge. In any case, books always serve the same purpose and that is helping in enriching valuable knowledge.

Fiction and Non-Fiction:fiction-and-nonfiction-1-638

I have a simple definition of both genres in my mind i.e that anything that has been written out of a person’s or basically author’s imagination is fiction and non fiction is content (often, in the form of a story) dependent on true facts which makes the author, in good faith, more responsible for the truth or accuracy of the events, people, and/or information presented. Its a story based on true facts or incidents, narrated through the eyes and point of views of the author.contrats-de-mutuelles-chienThere are sub categories of these broadened categories. For instance, a fictional book that involves science with action is generally referred to as sci-fi book or a thriller. Pure fictions are generally those books that are made up, but some of the elements of these sci-fi books are generally made of truths or real facts, and these elements are elaborated in such a manner, so that a completely new story can be created.

On the other hand, the non-fictional books might be books on social themes, biographies, travel books etc which gives real information depending on the true facts. They throw some light on many things going around us with the author’s point of views.

I always love to read fiction and that too mostly by Indian authors. They somewhere make up to be the bestsellers. Best part that I find about them is that the sensibilities are same and simple unlike the books by foreign writers. I feel for Indian authors as I guess that most of them, apart from all the famous ones, don’t get their due recognition compared to there foreign counterparts. I am looking for a place or waiting for a mega discount where I can go and buy like 15-20 books in one go and upgrade my collection. I deliberate that my birthday can be one such occasion.

Presently I am reading the Shiva trilogy by Amish. Yesterday a friend of mine made me realize that I am extremely late in reading it. i should have read it long back. But I started reading it when I fully got convinced that its worth a read. I went for a buy when I got a positive feedback from 90% readers who read it. And I am admitting that what a fabulous book it is. No better way to make the gods alive again. He has done such a tremendous task by making the gods perform the earthly activities. I am an ardent follower of Lord Shiva, so it was really formidable to find him alive and living to be a legend. After a very long time I have found something that has made me lost in itself so much that for sometime there was nothing on my mind except the book. I am zealously waiting to buy the next series on Lord Ram.

Another series that I can read for countless times is Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer. Mr Husband always makes fun of me for reading this for so many times but I just love reading it. The best part that I find is, that while reading it I was able to imagine everything happening in front of me, even when the movies were not made. There was a strong connect of the brain while reading it. It was a total engrossed read for me.

Apart from these I also like reading the books by famous writers like Shobha de and Chetan Bhagat. I finished all the Chetan Bhagat narratives back to back in 2 days. It was a fun experience. While  Shobha de books, I read just to find out that why her write ups are so famous. But sadly I failed to understand the hype.

How can I forget and not mention Paulo Coelho. Without him my post is incomplete. His ‘The Alchemist’ is one book that I will remember for a long time. Even ‘Brida’ was captivating. When I go through the list of his books written, I have a long way to go. I have not read many books till now which I have to. Adding all his books to my wishlist for the pseudo library.

Some of the Different Genres of Books:

There are again some different genres of books because the fictional and the non-fictional books are divided into different categories. Some of these popular genres include drama, satire, anthology, history, children, travel, guide, poetry, encyclopedia, horrors, thrillers, journals, diaries, cookbooks, prayer books, series and many more to mention.  Among them, the satires and anthologies are considered to be the two most interesting genres. Satires are generally written to make fun of something, but it is again different from humor while on the other hand, the anthologies are generally the compilations of different works. Apart from that, the different types of books that are available can also be explored, and this is a real assurance that learning about these books and their different categories would indeed be a fun-filled and entertaining experience.

Like these days I explore reading the cook books. While I am a stay at home mom, I keep experimenting and trying new dishes or basically those dishes that I have not made. One such cook book I enjoy reading as it has simple recipes is ‘ From my kitchen to yours by Maria Goretti’. Day before yesterday I tried making ‘jungli maas’ recipe from it and it turned out to be simple and very tasty( just a little bit of spicy).

Lately I laid my hands on ‘Mrs Funnybones by Twinkle Khanna’. I loved reading it. It was hilarious. It was worth a read. I am really praying and hoping for her to write more such books. Even her articles for Times of India are very captivating.

While admiring my collection, I realize with every passing day that reading is a beautiful legacy my parents have given me. Reading is an overwhelming experience each and every time I pick up a book to read. This is one thing I want to pass to my daughter. I want her to explore the magical world of reading by herself.

Books for Children and Adults:

Talking about the little one, last year, around this time, I went to crosswords to buy books for me. There I decided to buy the first book for the little one. Mr. Husband was surprised that whats the point of buying a book for her when she can’t even hold one. I looked him with expressions for a pity soul and went ahead with a determined sight to the children’s section. There I realized that its not a easy task to buy a book for her as there were so many of them, with a different genre. Every genre target a different age group. To sum up, I made a note, wide and clear that there are types of books that are written exclusively for children of different age groups, and these books deeply focus on the young and immature minds of children. Most of these books are written with images, so that it is easier for children to read and understand, and consequently, they can also gain lots of values from it. There are also some books written which contain little or no texts, and these have lots of real stories to tell. Children really love to go through these books, and visualize stories in sequence. Some of these books might also be participation books which might encourage the children to participate in different activities.

As parents reading stories with children introduces them to the complex nature of language and helps them in acquiring important language skills. However, the type of books read to children contributes to the depth of their learning. I read somewhere that parents should try to include a variety of books in their read aloud experience. Different types of genre books are associated with different amounts and types of language and each will encourage a different dialog or conversation with children. Some of these genres are

  1. Picture storybooks
  2. Participation books
  3. Patterned concept books
  4.  Wordless books
  5. Predictable books
  6. Folktales and fables
  7. Poetry
  8. Informational books
  9. Rhyming books
  10. Alphabet and counting books

I will surely try to elaborate on each genre in my subsequent posts, so keep reading.

On the other hand, there are also different adult books written, because the concepts associated with it are either beyond the understandings of the children or these are restricted for children. These adult books might also be written for different purposes, but as a whole, they largely help in the enrichment of knowledge, experience and values.

Different Categories of Books for Intelligence:

There are some books that can largely enhance the intelligence of the reader of any age group. These types of books are great source of information that can help in improving the capacity of the mind of the reader, which in turn, also helps in the overall improvement of life. These books also help in cultivating wisdom and intelligence and earn good values. Some of these categories of books might include serious fiction, which gives the reader an idea that some fictional books express truth; science books which are not only limited to the text books of science, but something that increase the knowledge and understanding of the natural world; poetry that can also create great imageries in the mind to help in the development of intelligence.

Encyclopedia, nature books, photography art and skills books, cook books, political books, spiritual books, cultural books, text books etc falls under this criteria.

Ending to start new….

Reading is a different experience in itself. And if you have someone with whom you share similar interest, it becomes fun. One drawback I have is that apart from reading I want to build my collection. So if the book is good I have to buy it. Writing is an art and reading is all about patience. The book cannot finish in one go. One should be patient enough to let the story unfold its layers. So I will be ending this post with a belief that as an author, I was able to put up some good reading material to keep everyone intrigued. And I will keep posting more under my favorite category books, reading and decor.

Happy reading and happy decorating.
